If
you're zoned-out staring at a computer screen right now, then
you too can be a Northwest pilot! And what a perfect Halloween costume: all you need is a
laptop, a pilot's cap and some bloodshot eyes. (Do-able.) And the best
Halloween Spooktacular around (especially if you have a little Balloon Boy
or Girl) is Treasure
Island's Haunted Hayride, starting
at 7:30pm Friday, October 30th at Treasure Bay Golf & Tennis on
Paradise Island. It's free and the costume contests begin at 6:30pm.
#1
lost item? Survey said: Car Keys!
Lose
a bicycle? (We'd like to ask how you might have managed to accomplish that - assuming you
locked up the bike and everything - but we won't ... for now). Perhaps
those car keys slipped from your pocket at the beach? The public often turns in
found items to the Treasure Island Police Department. Now you can check
online with the TIPD Lost and
Found page to see if your lost item has been recovered. This week,
a canoe was found. (Canoes can
float away. Bicycles? Mmm, not so much.) There are also some other new
features TIPD online including weekly
crime reports and monthly traffic
stop statistics.
Officials
call it "coastal management"; we call it "more sand"
On everyone's lips these days: beach sand.
(We'd like to ask how you might have managed to accomplish that
- assumin g you
weren't face down in the sand - but we won't ... for now). So when will
Sunset and Sunshine Beach get more new sand? It now looks like Pinellas
County will present the project timeline to us around March or April of
next year, with actual sand pumped onto the beach in May/June 2010.
In
the meantime, 150 tons of sand arrives for Sanding Ovations
We're the Sand Sculpture Capital of Florida. To
prove it, we've invited eight obsessed-with-sand dudes and dudettes (who happen to have won scads of sand sculpting awards) to create
some awesome sand sculptures for Sanding Ovations,
Treasure Island's first sand sculpting competition and music fesitval, on
the beach behind the Bilmar Beach Resort November 19-22, 2009. How did we
do it? Over $10,000 in prize money didn't hurt, thanks to Bud Light Lime,
Landshark Lager and Great Bay Distributing. Click the clicky above for all
the Sanding Ovations details, including musical lineup, sculptor bios and
schedule of events.

YOUR
CIVICS LESSON: Fall is when the TI civic associations get back
in action. The White Elephant Sale is the next Sunset
Beach Civic Association event on December 7th at the TI
Community Center. Want your Treasure Island association event listed in
e*ti? Email us the details here ... RUBBLE
TROUBLE: Gone is the old Chinese restaurant/bait shop/nail
salon/beach store /National Hay Association building on the
corner of 107th & Gulf. The plan was: knock down most of the old
building (done); keep the art moderne facade, then build a new
structure behind it. Whoops, wouldn't you know it, turns out the facade
was none too sturdy and crumbled like a wobbly metaphor. The developers
are presenting a new plan to the P&Z Board next Wednesday at 4pm.
And, yes, the old building was indeed the home of the National
Hay Association ... SPEAKING OF DOWNTOWN REDEVELOPMENT:
The City Commission and the Planning & Zoning Board will meet
Wednesday, November 4th at 5pm in City Hall to review the Special
Area Plan for downtown TI. What does this mean? A lot of orange
chairs to set up, to be sure. The plan, or "concept" if you
prefer, "promotes a more
pedestrian-friendly form of development, with storefronts lining
streetscapes, parking in side and rear yard locations, and a mix of
uses that promotes walking, supports street level activity, and
maximizes the use of limited parking resources."
LIKE
VEGAS ON WATER: The annual TI Holiday Boat Parade is Sunday,
December 13th ... FALL
BACK: Set your clocks back one hour this Sunday at 2am.
Or Saturday before bed. Or anytime between now and Sunday and be early
for something for a change ... Next e*ti: November 12th (we promise ...
we missed a newsletter this month when our software took a dive).
