COMMISSION MEETING 12/2/08 |

To celebrate the harvest, the
Pilgrims and the Indians came together in a feast - the greatest in
all the land. That's the story of the first Thanksgiving, but it
leaves a major question unanswered: why did Pilgrim hats
have buckles? It turns out just
about everything we were taught about the Pilgrims is wrong.
Pilgrims wore bright colored clothing and were a pretty tolerant
bunch. They were party people - seriously. Their first
destination choice wasn't America, it was Amsterdam , which
says a lot right there. And no buckles on their hats, or even on
their shoes - buckles didn't come into fashion until the late 1600s.
The Puritans (that other Mayflower bunch) ... not so much. The
Puritans wore black and white and were humorless and authoritarian
and conformist. Imagine going camping with Dick Cheney -
kind of like that.
Pilgrims on
Harleys
They definitely have buckles and are
way colorful. About 1000 Harley riders will
cruise through Treasure Island on Jim's Harley Davidson
annual Toys for Tots Run on Sunday, December 7th. The HOGs
should arrive on TI around 10:20am. TIPD will temporarily halt
traffic enteringGulf
Boulevard as the bikers pass through the
city.
Starting December 1st - new dune
walkovers! Your beach-goin'
feet will be - dare we say? - happy feet when they feel the
luxurious texture of Treasure Island's new dune walkovers. You may
just want to walk back and forth all day and forget
about the beach - they are that nice. Made from a plastic
substance we think was developed by Scotty in Star
Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the work to replace 18 existing dune
walkovers starts with the December
1st demolition of 6 dune walkovers from Land's End north to 79th
Terrace. The new walkovers will be constructed in groups of six
working northward. You should experience 'happy feet' by the first
week of the new year.
To boldly go where no dunes
have gone before Dune Date: 1206.08.
The wall along Treasure Island's Beach Trail may be replaced or
removed one day but until then, the crew of the USS Beach
Stewardship Committee will plant 10,000
sea oats to create a dune line parallel to the wall. Beam down
to the parking lot at 120th Avenue on Saturday, December 6th at
8:30am. Bring a shovel and your
tricorder.
Let's Glow Golfing
It's like being
in a room with nothing but blacklights and Hendrix posters, except
you're on a golf course (and Jimi was better with an axe than a
nine-iron, anyway). Let's
"Glow" Golfing is golf under a full moon and all your play items
glow like Three Mile Island. Just $20 per person and we'll throw in
all the hotdogs you can stuff in your face or your golf bag for
free. Thursday night, 6pm, December 11th at Treasure Bay, 10315
Paradise Boulevard. Pre-registration required at
727-360-6062.

COULD SOMEONE HAVE A HOLIDAY
EVENT IN AUGUST, WHEN NOTHING IS
HAPPENING? Here we go!
It's a giant list of stuff going on in December ... The
Sunset
Beach White Elephant Holiday Party &
Potluck, Monday, December 1st, 6:30pm, TI
Community Center. Bring your White Elephant gift and
signature appetizer or dessert. Bring a real white
elephant and be talked about for years. RSVP 687-2522
... Santa's Mailbox at TI City
Hall opens December 1st. Santa answers all letters when
you include a return address. While Santa is
all-powerful, Santa is a busy man and does not have time
to track down children who willingly disrupt the smooth
flow of US Mail ... It's a homemade Italian Buffett at
the Isle of Capri Holiday Dinner Party
Friday, December 19th, 6:30pm at the TI Community
Center. Tickets are $10, $5 for kids and available at
367-1471 ... Our downtown Holiday
Parade, choreographed with Mayberry- like
precision, is Saturday, December 6th at
4:30pm. Every year, the parade generally slows
up around the clock tower, which makes for a fine
opportunity to taunt your friends on the floats and
listen to Bogey's High School Marching Band. Afterward,
at the TI Community Center, kids can visit
with Santa (who will no doubt remind them of the
importance of using a return address on all mail)
and help Mayor Mary Maloof in the annual Tree
Lighting Ceremony at 6pm ... It's like Las
Vegas with hulls and props - it's the 23rd Annual Holiday Lighted Boat
Parade Sunday, December
14th, beginning at 6:20pm. Here is a whole page of
Festivus-esque activities surrounding the parade ...
