COMMISSION MEETING
6/15/10
As the Earth continues
to barf
crude into the Gulf of Mexico, after the
awesomely-named "top kill" failed, after BP tried to use junk like golf
balls, hair, and bits of tire to plug the leak (think of your
sink after you haven't done the dishes in a while), it finally
appe ars that the giant scissors worked. And the
talk of using a nuclear bomb ... well, there's certainly
nothing that could wrong with that,
right? (Although after
looking at satellite views, the Louisiana coastline looks
just a bit
slimmer today. Dressing it in black really did the trick.
Thanks, BP!) There is good news, though: the spill was a financial windfall for the
golf-ball industry. And if you work for Dawn Detergent's
advertising department, you are high-fiving. Even though the
oil slick is nowhere near Pinellas
County Beaches (it's still about 300 miles away), volunteers
are needed, you know, just in
case.
Summer 2010 was officially born
with Bands on the Sand 2 this
past Saturday. This
means that in just 12 short weeks it will be Labor Day,
so take advanatge of summer in Treasure Island, which,
don’t let anyone convince you is not great, because it
is. We're producing
Photoshop-quality summer sunsets (doing it on a daily basis,
for the record) and celebrating with Saturday
Sunsets on the Trail, a late-afternoon stroll on our
beach trail, filled with arts and crafts vendors, some
music, and some street performances - just like Key
West, except without the blur and slur. We're doing
the sunset celebration this Saturday, June 5th from 5
to 9pm on the beach between 104th and 108th Avenues and
again on June 19th, July 3rd & 17th, August 7th & 21st
and September 4th. And you can park all day on the beach for
just $10 or for $5 on the Community Center lawn or for $4 in
the Community Center lot (where our new pay stations accept
credit cards).
Sure, government
meetings are like watching sausage being made,
but it's fascinating and you get to grill the sausage
(it says so, right in the Constitution ... the Sausage Amendment, we
believe). Right now, Treasure Island is in the midst of a huge
meat factory of meetings: the Charter
Review Committee (the Bratwurst of
Meetings) meets Tuesdays at 2pm at City Hall and will serve up
some piping hot amendments for you to chew on; the
hot dogs of the Local
Planning Agency talk about off-street parking
regulations on Wednesday, June 9th at 3:30pm; and the Vision
Steering Committee fires up the Big Gas Grill of
the Future on Thursday, June 24th at 5:30pm in the Garden Room
at the Community Center. Bring your tongs and take a juicy
bite of delicious local
government!

The Artist Formerly Known as Republican
Governor Charlie Crist (seen here fondling a fish-like
object) is allowing everybody in Florida to
saltwater fish for free this weekend. No license required.
(Give a man a fish and he eats for a day; teach a man to fish
and he'll sit in a boat drinking beer all day) ... After
ten years of sniffing drugs, Sasha, our TIPD drug-sniffing
K-9, has retired.
Sasha will
enjoy her remaining days with the family of Corporal
Daren Chiaputti in a lifestyle more
customary to a Labrador Retriever. She will continue to sniff,
um, other things ... Speaking of fertilizer,
the new county
fertilizer ordinance went into effect June 1st, which
means you need to give your lawn a vacation from the chemicals
until September 30th ...The Sunshine Beach Homeowners
Association is back in action again and meets July 6th at
7pm in the Garden Room at the Community Center ... Get the
kids fingers off the video game fun button and into
Quickstart Tennis as Tennis Pro Phil Girardi
launches another summer of Quickstart Tennis for kids ages
5-8 beginning June 21st. Details at 727-360-6062 ... What do
get when you put your elected officials and city staff together in a
lovely room with rather comfortable furniture and lots of
colored magic markers? If you said "surrealism with a hint of
bubblegum," we'd say you're not getting enough oxygen.
But if you're like most people, you'd say "an interesting
visioning session filled with compelling comments,
observations and astute cartoons." Our gang went to
St. Petersburg College's Collaborative Labs on May
28th and came away with a great primer on the
future of Treasure Island. Give it a read here
... Saturday night June 19th we're showing
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on a big
outdoor screen on the beach behind the Bilmar. Drag your
Barcaloungers or lawn chairs down to the beach and chill
out with a free movie under the stars. Flick begins at
9:15pm and yes, there will be popcorn and abundant other
salt-covered snacks ... THE FINE PRINT: Produced by the
City of Treasure Island Public Information Office since 2006,
e*ti is sent to 205 subscribers, most of whom live on Planet
Earth. Back issues of e*ti (we call them "The Funny Years")
available here.
You may now return to your Scotch and prescription sleeping
aids.
