TI WEATHER |  LATEST E-ALERT  |  COMMISSION AGENDAS

Canadian-American week begins October 10th in Treasure Island with a visit from Niagara Falls, Ontario Mayor Ted Salci and the Westlane High School Band, so it's important - no, compelling - that we brush up on all things Canadian. Did you know ...?

  • Canada has the world's largest coastline.
  • Canada also has the world’s highest percentage of schoolchildren who know which country has the world’s largest coastline.
  • Canadians like to unnecessarily add ‘U’s to perfectly good words like colour, neighbour and houckey.
  • Canada is a constitutional monarchy, which technically means Canadians have to obey the Queen if she orders them to do something. It’s mainly a symbolic thing however, as she rarely exercises the privilege - the last time being in 1990 when she ordered Canada to export Celine Dion music to the States.

Wisely, the kids of the Westlane High School Band know better and stick to classics and show tunes when they perform at the TI Community Center on Monday, October 13th . Their concert begins at 4:30pm. October 13th also happens to be Canadian Thanksgiving Day and a feast will be served. Dine with Mayor Ted and end your sentences with an occasional "eh?" at the 8th Annual Canadian Thanksgiving . Tickets are only $10 (or ten Canadian Loonies) and available at the TI Chamber office at 144 107th Avenue.

Gary gets golf grants going
Our PGA Golf Pro over at Treasure Bay , Gary Metzger, has been awarded grant money to develop youth golf programs and introduce SNAG (Starting New at Golf) at local elementary schools this year. You know those specialty Florida Golf license plates? When you buy one, you help fund the Florida Sports Foundation grant. Gary's golf programs includes after-school events, school break golf camps and field trips to Treasure Bay's 9-hole par 3 course.

PSTA streamlines bus service
The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) is modifying all but four bus routes inPinellas County as of October 5, 2008. "These changes will save taxpayer dollars by cutting costs and making bus service more efficient," says Bob Lasher, PSTA Manager of Community Relations. PSTA has come up with "Transit Ambassadors" who will ride certain buses next week and answer any questions that pop into your head. Hopefully, questions about bus routes, people. Oh, and fares are going up, too, for all the usual 21st Century reasons. An online brochure is available here or
call the PSTA Info Line at 727-540-1900.
