The City of Treasure Island Department of Public Works is soon to begin a long awaited paving project in the Capri, Palms and Sunshine neighborhoods. Approximately $500,000 worth of work is scheduled to begin the week of September 8, 2009.
The work will take approximately four (4) weeks to complete. Two (2) working days prior to the work on any of the streets affected, the paving contractor, Overstreet, Inc. will notify the residents on the affected streets. This will be done to assure that the streets are free of vehicles and so you will know which streets will be affected and when.
The paving process will involve the milling (scarifying) of the streets to be paved after which a new hot mix asphalt surface will be applied. Milling strips a layer of approximately one (1) inch off the surface of the existing road. This is done to 1) to ensure the street surface is returned to near original profiles thus keeping the asphalt edge surfaces matched closely to the concrete curb surfaces and other structures such as manholes and catch basins; and 2) remove cracks in the roads and to reduce the likelihood of the cracking to return in the finished pavement. Surface cracks that in the paving are detrimental to the road base by allowing water to migrate down to the base eventually weakening the base and causing failures (potholes).
